Howard K. Stern Found Guilty in Anna Nicole Smith Drug Conspiracy

Howard K. Stern Found Guilty in Anna Nicole Smith Drug Conspiracy

The verdict is in on the most recent legal battle surrounding the late Anna Nicole Smith. In August, three people close to Smith at the time of her death -- her doctor Sandeep Kapoor, psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich, and lawyer/boyfriend Howard K. Stern -- went on trial for the crime of knowingly supplying drugs to an addict. In other words: Smith's doctors and boyfriend were accused of feeding the addiction that killed her in 2007. And only one of them was found innocent.

On Thursday, Howard K. Stern was found guilty of conspiring to get drugs for Smith by ordering prescriptions under his own name. Eroshevich, the psychiatrist, was found guilty of writing fraudulent prescriptions, as well as supplying addictive drugs to an addict. Both will face sentencing (a maximum of three years) in January. Kapoor, however, is free to go; he was acquitted of all charges.

So: does the "guilty" verdict answer any questions about Anna Nicole's death?

Not really. The official cause of death was accidental overdose, due to the combined effects of nine different prescription drugs. The reason Stern, Eroshevich and Kapoor were on trial is that all those drugs were prescribed by Eroshevich -- even though they should never have been prescribed simultaneously. And eight of them were prescribed in Stern's name. While they were convicted of supplying these drugs, Stern and Eroshevich were cleared on multiple other charges which would have put more responsibility for Smith's death (and up to six more years of jail) on their shoulders.

What happens to Stern and the doctors now is pretty inconsequential, as far as Anna's legacy is concerned. But the case does shed some light on how drug-addicted celebrities can manipulate the people around them to get prescriptions. From the evidence presented, it looks like Anna Nicole maintained a close, even borderline sexual, relationship with both of her doctors. An entry in Dr. Kapoor's private journal, read to the jury, contained this excerpt:

"I was making out with Anna, my patient, blurring the lines. I gave her methadone, Valium. Can she ruin me?"

The jury was also shown "a photo of Smith and Eroschevich naked and embracing in a bathtub." Although both Kapoor and Eroschevich swear that they were providing Smith with necessary drugs, due to her mental problems after the death of her son, they were obviously willing to blur the lines of the doctor-patient relationship and bend standard ethical rules, all for the sake of keeping their celebrity patient happy. Stern, too, put aside his better legal judgement in order to ease Smith's pain. Maybe none of them actually meant any harm. But then again, did Michael Jackson's doctors mean to hurt him? What about Heath Ledger's doctors? If Anne Nicole's psychiatrist gets jail time, maybe that will send the necessary message to celebrity doctors: sometimes, the best way to help is by saying no.

Do you think the doctors who prescribe too many drugs to celebrities should go to jail? Chime in below!

Michael Jackson's Mom Sues Concert Promoter AEG Live

Lawsuit allegedly filed by pop star's mother claims AEG Live neglected his medical care, according to an online report.
By Kara Warner

The litigation that has surrounded the tragedy of Michael Jackson's untimely death continues. Katherine Jackson, on behalf of and along with Michael Jackson's children, has filed suit against AEG Live, the promoter for the late superstar's 50-date concert residency. Jackson's mother charges the company breached its contractual agreement to provide medical care for her son and argues they were negligent in hiring controversial doctorConrad Murray.

According to TMZ, Katherine's filing claims AEG's contract with Michael "created a legal duty for AEG to act reasonably toward the physical well-being of Michael Jackson." The website also points out that the lawsuit lists Katherine Jackson as a Guardian ad Litem, or legal representative, for Michael's three children, which Katherine is not. Jackson's mother is in fact only the trio's guardian.

The gossip site suggests that the mistake, along with the fact that Katherine's reps know nothing about the lawsuit, suggests she is not actively involved in this case.

In other MJ-related lawsuit news, Conrad Murray's attorneys asked a federal judge on Wednesday (September 15) to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the singer's father, Joe Jackson, because he is not a beneficiary of the late singer's estate. The Associated Press reported that Murray's lawyers equated Joe's lawsuit to a "press-release that is intended to prejudice and inflame the jury pool and the public." The motion will reportedly be considered by a federal judge during a hearing scheduled for Oct. 18.

Joe Jackson sued Murray on June 25, the one-year anniversary of his son's death in 2009 at age 50. His lawsuit claimed the doctor withheld vital information about Jackson's medical history — including a list of all the drugs he had administered to his patient — from paramedics who responded to a 911 call, as well as to doctors at UCLA Medical Center who attempted to revive the singer. At the autopsy for Jackson, the complaint also alleges that Murray "said nothing" about having administered the surgical anesthetic propofol, which the coroner concluded caused Jackson's death. The lawsuit seeks more than $75,000 in damages.

Linkin Park's Chester Bennington Explains How He Ended Up In 'Saw 3D'

LP bandmate lives next door to 'Saw' producer Mark Burg.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias

Chester Bennington
Photo: MTV News

For the devoted Linkin Park fans out there, it might have come as a surprise to learn that frontman Chester Bennington was trying his hand at acting with a role in "Saw 3D." And while it's not his first film appearance — he had cameos in the two "Crank" films — in "Saw," he plays an actual character named Evan.

When MTV News caught up with Bennington recently, we asked him how he (figuratively) ended up in such a bloody mess.

"It's a funny story. Mark Burg, the producer of the 'Saw' films, he lives next to one of my bandmates in Linkin Park, and when he moved in and they got to meet each other, my bandmate brought up to Mark that I'm a huge fan of the 'Saw' films," Bennington explained. "I've literally, every time they come out, I'm [there on] opening day.

"I love the movies, so [I'm] very enthusiastic about it," Bennington continued. "And so, he was like, 'This is going to be so great. Chester's going to be so stoked that you're my neighbor. He loves the movies.' And from that conversation, Mark then said, 'Well, do you think he'd want to be in one of the movies?' The answer was a 'F--- yeah, are you kidding? I want to do that.' So that's how it evolved, and eventually this role came along and kind of fit."

Bennington added that the 3-D factor upped the action/gore ante a bit — to the point that his wife almost lost it.

"It was really cool," Bennington said of his gory scenes. "At one point, I was filming a part of the scene, and my wife was watching, and we're both huge fans, so we're watching. We've seen all the crazy crap that's happening in all these crazy movies. So, she's watching, and when we're filming this particular scene, she actually almost threw up. So I knew that we were doing something right if it made her want to puke."

Check out everything we've got on "Saw 3D."

Relationship Between Danielle Staub and Lori Michaels Deemed "Physical, Complicated"

In July, we asked whether Lori Michaels was the girlfriend or the publicity pawn of Danielle Staub. Turns out, the answer lies somewhere in between.

Sources tell Radar Online that the insane former Real Housewife and the openly gay singer were never an official item - but they did get "physical" together (yech!) and they did have a "connection."

"Lori was never going to put herself in a place where she was going to run away with Danielle," says the insider. "It became a complicated relationship."

Lori Michaels and Danielle Staub

Interesting. Tell us more, anonymous source!

"Lori doesn't do crazy. It's been a series of things. The truth is they both tried to make the relationship work on many levels... Danielle does her thing and Lori does hers. Lori appreciates the goodness when Danielle was able to give it, and I'm sure she appreciates what Lori has done."

What Lori did, of course, was enable Staub to extend her 15 minutes of fame and exploit the gay community in a despicable manner.

What caused the pair to go their separate ways? "The Danielle Staubness," this acquaintance says, concluding:

"Danielle's an all-or-nothing person and maybe it'll have to be the nothing because Lori's not dealing with the all."

Lady Gaga's Sexual-Harassment PSA Surfaces

A young Stefani Germanotta plays a harassed teen in instructional video.
By James Montgomery

By now, we all know that Lady Gaga has never been afraid to speak her mind, but it turns out Stefani Germanotta isn't either.

That's just one of the things we learned in "Real People — Sexual Harassment: What You Can Do," an educational video produced by the San Francisco-based Cerebellum Corporation that features a young Germanotta — still years away from becoming Gaga — as a student who is harassed ... and isn't about to take it.

Germanotta doesn't have any lines in the video, or at least not in the minute-long version posted on YouTube. But she definitely makes an impact in her brief scene (at the 0:40 mark), in which she walks out of a classroom — resplendent in a long-sleeved white shirt, blue skirt and, uh, clogs — and is grabbed by a male student (we know he's bad because he's got frosted tips) while his buddies cheer him on. But rather than cower away, Germanotta goes off on the dude, telling him his advances are unwelcome while her friend looks on. Oh, and you can tell the creep feels bad about it, since he lowers his head in shame.

It's a pretty compelling scene, right up there with Gaga's 2001 appearance on "The Sopranos" and that time she was on MTV's "Boiling Points." It's not exactly clear when the sexual harassment spot was filmed (though it appears to have been shot around the same time Gaga showed up on "The Sopranos"), but the YouTube clip was uploaded by the Cerebellum Corporation on February 18, 2010, and went largely unnoticed until eagle-eyed Gaga obsessives spotted their Mother Monster in the vid.

MTV News' phone calls to Cerebellum, seeking comment on the video, were not responded to by press time.

POLL: What Do You Think of Katy Perry's 'Firework' Video?

POLL: What Do You Think of Katy Perry's 'Firework' Video?

From "I Kissed a Girl" to "California Gurls," Katy Perry's music videos are known for their bright colors, upbeat dance scenes and obvious sexuality. But while the colors and dance beats return in her "Firework" video, the sexy singer flaunts an inspirational message instead of her cupcake-clad chest.

The music video for the third single on the newlywed's Teenage Dream album (which premiered Oct. 28) is all about learning to love yourself. In the chorus, a covered-up Perry sings: "Baby, you're a firework. Come on, show 'em what you're worth!" She drives home the point by featuring young people -- a cancer patient, an overweight teen, a closeted gay man -- struggling to let themselves shine.

In a YouTube interview, the singer explains the message. "Everybody can be a firework. It’s just all about you igniting the spark inside of you," Perry says. "This song would probably be my favorite song on the record."

Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj And More VMA Virgins

Sunday is a big night for these first-time nominees and performers.
By Kelley L. Carter

Be gentle with these guys — it's their first time as nominees or performers at the MTV Video Music Awards. Here's a look at this year's VMA virgins and where you'll see them come Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Ke$ha
It was almost impossible to turn the radio on and not hear Kesha's party-happy pop track "Tik Tok" over the past year. (She also did the background vocals on Flo Rida's ubiquitous "Right Round.") The singer is up for Best New Artist, and she'll present an award Sunday. "This is such a monumental thing for me to be nominated, because it really means people do really like what I'm doing," she said.

Nicki Minaj
Lil Wayne's wig-loving protégé will perform during the VMA pre-show on Sunday, and perhaps the mixtape diva will give us a taste of her forthcoming debut album, Pink Friday. "Obviously, this is something everybody dreamed of being part of, and I'm no exception to that rule," she said. "I just feel like this is my coming-out party. This is major for an artist with no album out."

Cascada
Natalie Horler fronts this German Eurodance group, and along with DJ Manian and Yanou, the band will make their VMA debut Sunday. They'll be competing in the newly revamped Dance Music Video category. Earlier this year, it was announced that they were the second-most-downloaded dance artists of all time. Who's the most downloaded? French DJ David Guetta, which brings us to our next rookie ...

David Guetta
The French DJ is responsible for sweating up dance floors, both international and domestic, and he finally nabs his first VMA for "Sexy Chick," featuring Akon.

B.o.B
The Atlanta rapper is up for five VMAs, and he'll take the stage for the first time.

Florence and the Machine
Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch is bringing her funked-out, soulful vocals to the VMA stage this year, where she's up for four awards.

Jason Derülo
The pop singer feels like he already won at the VMAs. Last year, he attended the awards, but he sat in the back of the house. "This year, I'm nominated for two awards. It's incredible," said the singer, who has opened for Lady Gaga. "I've watched these awards my whole entire life, so to finally be a part of it is a dream come true. Pinch me, please." Derülo will be taking the stage with VMA house artist Deadmau5.

Justin Bieber
Bieber presented a VMA with Ke$ha at the 2009 show, but this year, he's up for Best New Artist and is set to perform.

Deadmau5
In case you're wondering, it's pronounced "dead mouse" (real name: Joel Thomas Zimmerman), and he's a Canadian house producer. He'll be working as this year's house artist.

Chelsea Handler
The comedian is the first woman to host the VMAs since 1994. Prepare for laughter beyond belief from the E! talk-show hostess.

Drake
The Toronto rapper (and Lil Wayne protégé) is up for three Moonmen; he'll also perform at the VMAs for the first time.

Robyn
Fresh off a tour with Kelis, Robyn, a Swedish pop singer, will perform with deadmau5 on Sunday at the VMAs.

Bruno Mars
Up for one VMA (along with collaborator B.o.B), Bruno Mars will also perform for the first time at the VMAs.

Who's your favorite VMA virgin? Share your thoughts in the comments!

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Ke$ha Talks VMA Garbage Bag Ensemble, Lady Gaga's Meat Suit

Even if they didn't walk away with Moonmen, just about everybody who attended the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards exited the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a winner. Taylor Swift started some buzz with new music, and Paramore's Hayley Williams finally got to do a live tag-team with B.o.B. Another winner in spirit? Ke$ha, whose first visit to the VMAs was a positive one.

"It was amazing. I got to wear a garbage bag on national TV," Ke$ha gushed on the red carpet at the premiere of the second season for the HBO show "Eastbound and Down." "It was fun. It was good. And I got nominated for four, and it was a dream come true just to be there."

The 23-year-old singer, who did indeed wear a dress made from garbage bags, was impressed with the level of fashion experimentation at this year's show. "It was fun. I think everybody was having fun with it," she said. However, she is not entirely sure she would be able to take the steps that Lady Gaga did with her head-turning meat-based ensemble. "I don't know if I could actually put raw meat on me," she admitted.

With the VMAs behind her, Ke$ha is working on a new album, but was mostly excited to get out and support her favorite show on television. "I don't watch TV, but this show I connect with on a really deep level," she said. "I kind of feel like I'm the female version of Danny McBride: Kind of white trash, just ready to party."

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Lindsay Lohan's 'Inferno' Director Stands By Actress

'We're not replacing her with another person,' Matthew Wilder says of troubled starlet.

Lindsay Lohan may be in rehab until early 2011, but that doesn't mean that her "Inferno" director, Matthew Wilder, plans to replace the troubled starlet as the film's lead. In a statement released in response to her latest woes, the director said that he will stand by Lohan.

"We're not replacing her with another person," Wilder told the New York Daily News. "She's good and productive and thinking about life beyond [rehab]. I think she feels a little cooped up there, but she's OK."

The film was scheduled to begin production in November, but Lohan was ordered to remain in rehab until January 3, 2011, by Judge Elden Fox last Friday. Lohan voluntarily checked herself in to the Betty Ford Center last month after failing court-mandated drug tests.

During the course of Lohan's ongoing legal woes, Wilder has remained steadfast that he wants Lohan in the biopic about 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace. "We love her. We want her to do well," Wilder wrote in a statement e-mailed to MTV News in September. "We will make the picture shortly."

Also in September, Wilder said that the film will now shoot in Los Angeles instead of Louisiana, as was originally planned. No word on what those plans are now that she won't be out of rehab until January. "I think [it] will make things easier on the Lindsay front," he said. "I understand people's exasperation," Wilder admitted, referring to the former Disney darling's string of questionable life choices over the last few years. "I share it. But there is a tremendous gift underneath all the obvious baggage."

Do you think director Matthew Wilder should film "Inferno" without Lindsay Lohan? Tell us in the comments.

Kanye West Breaks Down Opening Line Of 'Runaway'

West said line about not trusting media reports is 'poignant.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Kanye West's film debut, "Runaway," is short on dialogue but the film's few verbal exchanges make an impact.

The first line appears minutes into the movie when West advises the newly arrived phoenix — played by Selita Ebanks — to be wary of the information dished out by the media. West shuts off a televised report that has captivated the phoenix, saying, "First rule in this world, baby, don't pay attention to anything you see in the news." West explained in an interview with MTV News directly after the film's premiere that he kicked off the dialogue with the concise declaration because of his personal experience with published hearsay.

"I just thought that was so funny," he revealed. "When me and Hype [Williams] sat and wrote the entire script we had a lot more dialogue and I just thought that was a poignant thing. I thought of it just on set ... for the first thing for you to hear me actually say on my first film. 'Cause everyday on the news there's some new bullsh-- about me ... or about everything going on. Once you're on this side of the camera you're like, 'Aw man, none of this stuff is actually real.' "

West added that he had specific ideas for the delivery of the film's spare script.

"I wanted to hit all the lines just kinda cheeky, really heavy-handed, on some [Quentin] Tarantino-like [style] 'Anything you say in the news,' " West said, playfully affecting a thuggish accent."So it almost has a cadence of rap."

'Ye added that the film's lack of verbally-articulated lines makes the project difficult to characterize.

"But just the fact that [there's] only three points of dialogue through it you can't classify what type of film this is either," he said.

As far as his acting skills, 'Ye said he feels he's on par with other filmmakers who occasionally jump in front of the camera.

"I think I'm around a level of like, Tarantino or Spike Lee or something like that" he said. "I'm no Daniel Day-Lewis ... but I created the whole thing so it doesn't really matter [as long as] you get the point."

'Ye's first foray into film clocks in about 35 minutes, but while the artist maintained that he'd like to see "Runaway" in movie theaters, he said he's not sure if he would make a feature-length production. West said he's largely indifferent to the running time of his projects and that it's all about putting out a game-changing piece of art.

"The idea of full-length is not my main concern," he said. "It's just that people enjoy themselves and ... they have to put their hands over their ears because what they see just blew their brains out."

What did you think of the dialogue in Kanye West's "Runaway" short? Tell us in the comments!

Kanye West's 'Runaway' Film Premieres

Chicago MC's debut short tells story of romance between West and a phoenix played by Selita Ebanks.

Kanye West's highly anticipated debut film, "Runaway," finally arrived on Saturday (October 23) and proved to be the "ambitious" effort that fans who previewed the short have been raving about for weeks.

The film's narrative focuses on the ill-fated relationship between West and a phoenix that plummets from the cosmos (Selita Ebanks). Their union is torn apart after the otherworldly creature is discriminated against for her curious behavior and features. Buoyed by West's soulful soundtrack, comprised of G.O.O.D. Friday joints and tracks slated for his forthcoming fifth LP, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the film's subtexts include themes of social ostracism and rebirth — issues the MC has said he identifies with.

The movie opens with West bolting furiously down a road tucked away in a forest, his partially unbuttoned shirt flapping against his bare chest. A fireball careening through the clouds lights up the screen as the voice of Nicki Minaj, affecting a colorful British brogue, cryptically introduces the film.

Then it's back to the picturesque country road. A sleek sports car motors along as the film's first song begins, which features West spitting lyrics like, "Too many Urkels on your team/ That's why your wins low," a line he dropped during his 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards cypher. Suddenly, the MTX Tatra Yeezy's driving crashes, and when he gets out to inspect the damage, he finds a phoenix lying in the road. West carries the fallen creature away from the scene as balls of fire continue to erupt behind them.

The next scene begins with the phoenix sleeping and twitching on a couch in a clean, minimalist room. She starts to awaken as a news report blathers on about a comet that set off a raging blaze and is startled when the broadcast is suddenly flicked off. West appears holding a remote, looks into the camera and utters the film's first few lines of dialogue: "First rule in this world, baby, don't pay attention to anything you see in the news."

During the next few sequences, as the phoenix hangs out in West's backyard and begins to discover her new surroundings, the pair's relationship blossoms as well. The phoenix sways as West knocks out a chopped-up revamp of "Power" on an MPC. A kid decked out in all-red, clutching a baton that spews crimson smoke into the air, heralds one of the film's most dramatic moments. As the megastar-studded collabo "All the Lights" kicks in, fireworks streak the sky and a marching band clad in crimson-colored ensembles appears. The crew leads a giant bust of Michael Jackson's head, as the phoenix and West look on in delight, clutching each other's hands. West's "Lights" lyric "Something wrong, I hold my head/ MJ gone, that n---a dead" blares as the procession continues and eerie-looking marchers sporting pointed red hoods bring up the rear.

In the following scene, the phoenix stumbles through a lesson on dining etiquette, clumsily practicing how to sip from a teacup with her long gilded talons. The moment foreshadows the subsequent scene and climax of the film — a formal dinner party.

The phoenix and West enter an expansive white hall to the buttery strains of 'Ye's second G.O.O.D. Friday release, "Devil in a New Dress." Seated at a large banquet table are several cocoa-skinned diners dressed in white; they shoot disapproving glares at the duo. The phoenix has dressed up her look with a gilded headpiece but disgusts her fellow diners with her inelegant table manners. West seems amused by the scene until the guest next to him strikes up an unsettling conversation.

The man leans in, saying, "Your girlfriend is really beautiful," and West replies proudly, "Thank you."

"Do you know she's a bird?" the guest queries.

"Naw, I never noticed that," Yeezy deadpans, looking pained.

"I mean, like, leave the monkey in the zoo," the man responds.

The brief exchange appears to upset West, who crosses the room and begins to punch out wobbly versions of the otherwise crisp opening notes of "Runaway" on an out-of-tune piano.

Instantly, a wave of dancers sporting black tutus crash the affair and bust out a mix of classical ballet and contemporary footwork. The guests continue to dine as West performs, raising their glasses at one point as the song, which salutes "douche bags," plays on. West climbs atop the piano and belts out "Run away from me, baby!" before the camera circles the company of dancers now frozen in place. Then, several lead dancers take turns at solos, which are spliced together in a seamless, slow-motion montage. The ladies gyrate, execute pas de bourrées and agile arabesques as the garbled Auto-Tuned vocals and choppy violins of the song's extended outro chirp away. When West, still holding court at the piano, puts his hand over his heart, the dancers thunder out as quickly as they came and the diners applaud.

However, the occasion comes to an unfortunate end when the main course is served. A large, plated feathered turkey is set in front of the phoenix. She begins wailing in agony at the sight, wings splayed, her screams driving away the dinner guests. West sits quietly, looking dejected.

Later, as the couple sit on his roof, she asks where statues come from. However, as 'Ye begins to explain, she cuts him off and insists sculptures that populate the globe are just phoenixes that have been turned to stone by a rigid society and declares she has to "burn" and return home.

"Do you know what I hate most about your world?" she asks West. "Anything that is different you try to change. You try to tear it down." West begs her to stay and they make love, the phoenix, bathed in red light, writhing on top of West to the balmy, Auto-Tuned a cappella vocals that kick off West's Bon Iver-assisted track "Lost in the World."

West wakes up the following morning alone on the roof and, realizing the phoenix has decided to return to her realm, darts off into the forest, playing out the film's opening scene. But the phoenix has already started her fiery journey back home, outfitted in a golden breastplate. She looks forlorn as she shoots into the sky, leaving behind a brilliant blaze and a desperate West still sprinting through the forest.

Ne-Yo 'Doesn't Know What To Do' With Songs He Wrote For Michael Jackson

'I can't sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful,' the singer said.
By James Dinh

While producer Rodney Jerkins is expecting to begin work on an album of unreleased Michael Jackson music, Ne-Yo, on the other hand, isn't sure what to do with the material he wrote for the late King of Pop before MJ's death last year. The R&B singer/songwriter told Australia's Daily Telegraph that he was sending Jackson three or four drafts a week prior to his unexpected death. More than a year later, Ne-Yo now still stands at a crossroads as he contemplates what to do with the songs he created specifically for the one and only MJ.

"I can't sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful, but I also think it might be disrespectful to bring them out myself. So I don't know, I'll sit on them and wait. It's definitely quality music but they were songs written absolutely for Michael Jackson."

According to the newspaper, Jackson hand-picked Ne-Yo as well as Black Eyed Peas producer Will.I.Am to work on his comeback album. It was only a matter of time before Ne-Yo was met face to face with his musical idol.

"I felt quite bad, as I'd allowed what the media had done to his name and image to have me thinking, 'OK, what's this about to be? Is this going to be weird?' " he recalled. "But he walked in a black suit and some sunglasses and was a genuine, nice guy. And it wasn't because he wanted something from me, he just had no reason other than to be a decent guy."

During their meeting, the duo talked about the current state of the music industry, something Ne-Yo says Jackson wasn't too pleased with. "He believed what was wrong with a lot of music today is that people aren't singing about anything. If it's not about a party or sex then it's about money, and there's not really much to that."

Ne-Yo, who has penned hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as himself, explained that the entertainer wanted songs that were "melodic and meaningful." "Michael told me the melodies needed to be the ones you heard once and could sing back, and the lyrics needed to have meaning and depth," he said.

Unfortunately, Ne-Yo's submissions weren't recorded by Jackson, because the singer put his album on hold to rehearse for his This Is It concert series at London's 02 Arena before passing away.

But Ne-Yo has hope that one day he'll figure out what to do with the Jackson tracks. "Hopefully the songs will see the light of day, it just has to be the right way," he said.

What do you think Ne-Yo should do with the songs he created for Michael Jackson? Should he keep them locked up or let someone else give them a try? Let us know what you think below!

Lady Gaga Postpones Paris Shows Due To Strikes

Singer pushes back dates, citing fuel/transportation concerns amid refinery workers' protests.

Lady Gaga's French fans will have to wait until the end of the year to catch the Monster Ball spectacle in concert. The pop superstar's tour backer, Live Nation, announced Wednesday (October 20) that her Paris dates, scheduled near the end of the month, will be pushed back as a result of ongoing strikes in the region.

"As a result of the logistical difficulties due to the strikes in France, Live Nation today announced that the Lady Gaga performances in Paris at Bercy previously scheduled for this Friday and Saturday 22 & 23 October are postponed until 19 & 20 December, 2010," read a statement posted on the star's website.

The European nation has been in the throes of civil upheaval for weeks since French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a proposal to bump the minimum retirement age up from 60 to 62 and raise the age that citizens can receive pension benefits from 65 to 67. Many workers have gone on strike, including employees of France's oil refineries, leading to fuel shortages throughout the country.

"Unfortunately, as there is no certainty that the trucks can make it to the Bercy for this weekend's shows, the Lady Gaga performances are now postponed," the statement continued. "The December 19th concert will replace the 22-October show and December 20th concert will replace the 23-October performance."

According to the statement, Gaga's little monsters have until mid-November to turn in tickets for a refund or swap out a new ticket for either of the winter dates.

"Fans with tickets to the rescheduled shows must exchange their tickets or claim for refund from now through November 14th at their point of purchase," the statement read. "Tickets dated October 22 and 23 will not be valid at the new dates." The statement concluded with "Lady Gaga apologizes to her fans for any inconvenience."

The postponed dates are a setback for an acclaimed global trek that has racked up cash around the world. Gaga's tour is projected to pull in roughly $200 million when it winds down in April 2011.

Fat Calves

I have fat claves.

I have fat calves.

I have fat calves and I have a problem buying tall boots in the Fall/Winter because of them.

Even when I'm skinny, I have fat calves. I've always had them. I remember being a size four and not being able to find boots that fit. I just have fat calves.

I told this to Mark tonight and said, "I can't even blog about it because it's embarrassing," and he said, "Own it!"

So I am. I have fat calves.

What's prompting this is that I got a pair of Hunter boots today. I thought if anything is going to fit, surely it will be these gigantic rain boots. But low and behold, I tried one on and it got stuck on my leg. I seriously thought I was going to have to cut it off. (The boot. Or the leg.) And you know, the boots are rubber, so the harder I pulled, the hotter my leg became and the tighter the boot got. When I finally pulled it off it was like "Pop!"—it was like a suction.

I'm so bummed out.

I have fat calves.

I have fat calves.

I have fat calves and I hate them.

U2 Working with Danger Mouse On New Album

Band has already recorded 12 songs with the producer.
By Gil Kaufman

Over the past six years, producer Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton has compiled one of the most impressive lists of collaborators in recent music history. From Gorillaz to the Black Keys and Beck to his bands with Cee-Lo (Gnarls Barkley), the Shins' James Mercer (Broken Bells) and members of Blur and the Clash (The Good, the Bad & the Queen), Danger has dipped his toes in a wide and impressive variety of creative pools.

But, as cool as that résumé is, for his latest trick the onetime mash-up master has landed one of the premier gigs in all of music. According to Bono, Danger has produced songs for the upcoming album from the Irish rock gods, which the frontman told The Age is slated for release early next year.

"We have about 12 songs with him," Bono said of the tentatively titled Songs of Ascent, just one of three albums the group is working on. "At the moment, that looks like the album we will put out next, because it's just happening so easily." While Bono did not reveal much about how those songs came together or what they will sound like, he did say the group is also working on a "club" record that will feature tracks created with Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, as well as will.i.am and David Guetta.

"U2's remixes in the 1990s were a real treasure," Bono explained. "So we wanted to make a club-sounding record. We have a pile of songs."

While a return to the Achtung Baby era of big beats and dance-floor-worthy tunes seems like an odd detour for the act after a string of albums that brought them back to their anthemic rock roots with a few slight detours into world-music-inspired melodies, the third album in the works is perhaps the most unusual.

Bono said he would like to record some of the nearly 2 dozen songs he and guitarist The Edge have written for the "Spider-Man" Broadway musical they are scoring, but selling the other two members of the group on the project has been tough so far. "We haven't convinced the rest of the band to do that yet," he said. "[Drummer] Larry [Mullen Jr.] definitely has a raised eyebrow."

What do you think of U2 teaming up with Danger Mouse? Let us know in the comments!
